Marilyn "Mrk" Mrkvicka lost her battle to cancer in October 2014. She was the coach of the Washington Park HS Pom team for 32 years, Badgerette Hall of Fame Honoree, true friend and loyal supporter of all things Badgerette, pom and dance. She dedicated her life to the students she taught and coached at WPHS and she was so very proud of them all. I have successfully completed semester one of my amazing college adventure in the “Big Apple”. My dream has been to be a professional dancer ever since I was little. Today I am living out that dream in the best city in the world at Pace University. Everyday I wake up surrounded by talented and driven people who push me beyond my limits and inspire me to achieve all of my goals. On top of having access to some of the best dance training I have ever received, the school also fulfills my desire for strong and interesting academics. An added bonus is that I get to do it alongside fellow Badgerette staff member, Kathleen Laituri. Thank you Badgerette for your support in helping me chase my dreams! Being a part of your program has changed my life immensely.
2016 ~ Gabi Kim, Arrowhead HS, WI
Once again, I want to say thank you for the incredible generosity of this scholarship. I am currently working towards a major in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a certificate in Sustainability at UW-Madison. So far, my college experience has been full of lots of dancing with the UW Dance Team at Badger Football and Basketball games and in preparation for UDA Nationals in January! I am so thankful to have the opportunity to continue to do what I love at such an amazing university...and I'm thankful for all the experiences that high school dance team and Badgerette have given me. I wouldn't be where I am without them!
2016 ~ Sydney Nelson, Brookfield Central HS, W
I can't begin to thank Badgerette enough for all the wonderful opportunities and experiences I was given throughout my time in high school. The support I received to help in my desire for a higher education is appreciated beyond words. I am currently attending The University of Alabama and absolutely love it! During my first semester, I was able to pursue new experiences and friendships on campus. Through joining a sorority, I have been blessed to have the ability to form lifelong friendships in a sisterhood. I am also apart of my dorm's residential community organization where we work on fixing problems students see on campus. School has been going great, and I have loved all the classes I have been taking. Adapting to this transition and new adventure has been worthwhile, and I look forward to the time I have ahead. Thank you again Badgerette for your endless love and support in helping me pursue my dreams.
2016 ~ Maria Heinen, Greendale HS, WI
I have absolutely adored college thus far. I never knew rural, ho-dunk Michigan would be the place l would call my home, but it has shown to be the perfect fit for me. I have been making long-lasting relationships with both my peers and professors, have found a dance outlet in Hillsdale’s Tower Dancer Company, and am continually challenged in my faith life and education every day. The people I have met are genuine, kind, and very supportive of me and my endeavors, including the publishing of my personal style blog: www.theroseandcurl.com. I felt so ready to go to college for so long before I could actually attend, and that entire lead-up time was well worth it. College has defied all of my expectations and I feel so blessed to have found a place that I can completely be myself. Thank you again for giving me so many wonderful opportunities that have served to shape me into the woman I am today. I am forever indebted to my team and your program for making high school a growing and teaching experience for me.

I have been staying extremely busy within the Dance Department at Kent University, and this past semester had the opportunity to participate in our pre-professional dance company, The Kent Dance Ensemble. Last winter, I was also able to study abroad in Bangkok, Thailand and will be going to Florence, Italy this summer where I will participate in the OPEN FLR dance intensive. While abroad in Thailand, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a group of students working toward their Master’s degree and teach a variety of classes including modern, jazz, and technique in exchange for learning classical Thai danceIn the future I plan to pursue my Master’s in Higher Education Administration at NYU and strive to continue to have a positive impact helping others. I cannot begin to thank Badgerette enough for the incredible opportunity that I have been provided with and know for a fact that I would not be where I am today without the organization. It taught me so many valuable life skills and has shaped me into the individual I am today. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than seeing how it continues to impact the lives of young women and influence people in a positive way. Badgerette taught me the importance of teamwork, cheering on my friends and peers, how to stay poised and sophisticated, all while keeping a bright smile on my face. I am so thankful that Badgerette gave me the opportunity to chase my dreams!
2014 ~ Ashley Gavigan, Oconomowoc HS, WI
I am now a junior at UW-Madison and am enjoying life as a college student! I am majoring in Biology and getting a certificate in Global Health. I will be applying to PA schools starting this spring, and hope to continue my education at UW-Madison by attending PA school here after I graduate. I have been on Dance Elite, the official club dance team at UW, for three years now and am so glad I have been able to continue my love and passion for dance in college. I am co-president of the club this year, and I have enjoyed being more involved in leading and growing the club. I have attached a picture of my team at our most recent competition, at which we won first place in both the collegiate lyrical and collegiate hip hop divisions. I am also involved in volunteering at a local hospital, and I work as a caretaker for a woman with special needs a couple days a week.I want to thank you and the Badgerette organization again for giving me this scholarship. It has helped me continue on in my education and, in turn, encourage my future dreams. This is a wonderful and inspirational organization for young women across the Midwest. I am so lucky to have been able to experience all that the Badgerette organization is.

I'm currently a junior at Vanderbilt University, majoring in Medicine, Health, and Society with plans to go into public health. I've had an amazing experience so far at Vanderbilt— I've gotten to meet some incredible people, and I've had a lot of fun exploring Nashville! I've had the opportunity to sing in a choir, dance in several cultural showcases, and get involved in planning my school's multicultural recruitment weekend. Next semester, I'm looking forward to traveling to Brazil over spring break as part of a global health research project! Thank you, Badgerette, for all of your support!
2014 ~ Sophia Olmos, St. Thomas More HS, WI
I would like to thank you once again for the wonderful opportunities you have given me throughout my high school years and beyond. I'm happy to say that I continue to dance with a team on campus at Northwestern University, and was elected captain this year. I use the leadership and team building skills that I learned throughout my Badgerette experience with my team every day, and it has made us fierce friends and dancers. I'm glad that there is a program like this to teach girls that dance lessons are for life. I also am continuing with my Biology major and am now a Global Health minor. I've secured a Pharmaceutical Consulting internship for this summer that I'm very excited for. Finally, this spring I'll be studying abroad in South Africa! I can't wait to see how that will go, as I've heard only good things about the program!
